Professional Development
The Curriculum and Instruction Department facilitates district professional development initiatives and serves as a liaison between the Department of Public Instruction and schools to inform teachers about professional development opportunities. The state has approved waivers for districts to provide staff development on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study to support instructional goals of the district. The five days for staff development are September 21, October 11, February 15, February 18, and March 8. The focus of the work will revolve around the implementation of Common Core and Essential Standards to meet the needs of all learners. Focused sessions will emphasize the Literacy Standards for History/Social Studies, Science, and the Technical Subjects, Technology Standards, and English Language Development Standards. School level PLCs will continue to work between professional development days.
Teachers in the district will continue to work on Anatomy of a Lesson, Literacy First, and Capturing Kids Hearts. Schools will begin a multi-year bullying prevention program as well.

Teachers should sign up for district staff development using the SEA System. The SEA System tracks participation in activities in order to award continuing education units to licensed teachers. In order to support this process, teacher must sign up on SEA System, sign in to each professional development session, complete all required elements of the session, and complete the follow up surveys sent automaticallly through SEA System.
